My Story

Eighteen years ago, I arrived in the United States from Mexico with three children, no legal status, no English, and very little money. I didn’t know how anything worked here. I didn’t know the language, the system, or who to ask for help. What I did have was determination — and a deep belief that if I kept going, things would get better.

And they did.

I learned English. I went from cooking hamburgers and cleaning offices to earning a business degree. I became a U.S. citizen. And eventually, I landed a position with the federal government as a passport and fingerprints agent — sitting on the other side of the desk, helping people apply for the very document that represents belonging, identity, and the freedom to travel.

That job changed everything for me. Not just because of what I did, but because of what I saw.

What I Saw

Every day, I watched people walk in confused, overwhelmed, and unprepared. They had the wrong form. They were missing a document. Their photo didn’t meet the requirements. They didn’t know whether to mail their application or appear in person. Some had driven hours to get there.

And many of them — especially immigrants, first-generation Americans, and people with limited English — had no one to guide them through the process beforehand. The information existed, but it was scattered, complicated, and written in bureaucratic language that felt designed to confuse rather than help.

I knew this feeling personally. I had lived it.

So I asked myself: What if there was a service that made this simple, affordable, and accessible to everyone — especially the people who need it most?

That question became American Passport.
